What it means to get a High
Ranking
Traffic. And lots of it! A high ranking in the
most popular search engines is the dream of every online marketer.
After all, without a steady flow of visitors to your website, how
are you going to earn your fortune? If nobody sees your website,
then nobody is going to know what you have to offer.
It's just like a store down town. The ones on the busiest streets
get the most business. The mom and pop opperation stuck away in
a corner someplace, or down an untraveled road gets very little
business, because it isn't seen by many. They usually get just enough
customers to eek out a living. And for some that's all they want
to do, and that's fine. To each his own. But if you want to make
a fortune (which is what most netrepreneurs want to do) then you
have to get on a busy street.
Take yourself as an example. When you do a search from your favorite
search engine, how far out of the way do you really go to find what
you are looking for? Or in other words, how many pages will you
scroll through to find the website that has the information you
are looking for? Believe it or not, the majority of people don't
go beyond page two. And I am one of the majority. If I ever do go
past page two, then I am just scrolling haphazardly, waiting for
something to jump out and catch my eye.
Page one on the other hand, is a different story. I scroll slowly,
reading carefully, and almost always click on the top ten beginning
at number one. And if I find what I am looking for on the third
one down, that is usually as far as I go. And it's that way for
most people. So you can see why a high ranking, especially the number
one position, is the most coveted place to be on the internet.
A high ranking is better than any other method of advertising there
is. Statistics have repeatedly shown that up to 80% of your visitors
will find your web site via the search engines.
PPC or pay-per-clicks can get you to the top of page one in the
sponsored areas, but you have to pay to be there, and depending
on the keyword, you could pay dearly. And you need to be very careful
with your PPC campaigns. I learned that the hard way. Here's how.
In one of my active PPC campaigns with Overture.com, I selected
some new keywords. I submitted them for review without setting my
bid amount first. I just thought that when they approved them, I
could go through and set my bid amount before activating them. But
as soon as they approved them, they went active, and one keyword
got 89 clicks the first day. And that keyword was automatically
set to put me in the number one position, at $10.00 per click!
Now, if I was selling a product that made a profit of $400.00 per
sale, and those 89 clicks resulted in at least three sales, then
it would have been worth that high amount of money per click. But
what I was offering was a membership in a multilevel marketing business
that brings me $1.00 (one dollar) per month for every person that
signs up. Those 89 clicks got me ZERO sign ups, so what happened
was I basically threw $890.00 into the wind. It hurt, but I learned
a valuable lesson. NEVER submit your keywords for approval without
setting the bid price first, or pausing your campaign.
With the right keywords, PPC campaigns are very effective. But
getting listed generically (without paying) in the top of the search
engines is what every business should strive for. And of course
most do. Your profit margin is SO much bigger.
How to get on Top
Although most want to get a top position, not everyone will put
in the needed effort to get there. And that gives us an advantage.
Even though our competition is in the millions, or so it seems,
it really isn't that competetive. For example, look at the following
picture. I did a Google search for the keyword money, and it returned
a results of 2billion, 240million websites listed under the keyword
"Money".

How many of those are actually your competition? Very few, fortunately.
Every website will get listed under the keyword "money"
automatically, if the word is mentioned in the meta "keywords"
tag, the meta "description" tag or the title. Even if
you have a blog about dogs, and the word "money" is in
the title or one of the two meta tags mentioned, your blog will
be found under the keyword "money". Although it may be
more than 2 billion from the top, it will be there. In fact it will
be found under every word listed in the title or meta tags mentioned
above.
But if money is a keyword that you want to get listed on top with,
then you have some work to do.There are three main things that you
should concentrate on to get listed on top.
1. Title and Description
The keyword or phrase that you want top placement with must be
in either the title, or the description. It is better if you can
put it in both. Do a Google search right now, and type in a keyword.
You will notice that the keyword is listed in either the title or
description or both, in every result that was returned. The keyword
searched is bolded in both title and description.
In your Google search, the title is the line of blue words on top
that are underlined, the description is the list of words in black
just beneath the title, and the green underneath the description
is the actual URL of the web site.
The title of the website is also what shows up on the tab in your
taskbar at the bottom of your web brouser.
See Building
a Website for more info on title and meta tags.
2. Link Popularity
Almost all search engines now place a heavy emphasis on your site's
"link popularity." Link popularity can be defined as a
ranking system that involves measuring and ranking the number of
links that are directed towards a particular web site.
This helps a search engine to better determine the relevancy of
your site to a particular search. After all, the more people linking
to you, the better the likelihood that you are a good resource for
the topic at hand.
You can check out your existing link popularity by going to a site
like LinkPopularity.com
or Alexa.com , punching in your URL
and having a look at exactly how many sites are linking to yours
and exactly who they are. You can also check your link popularity
with Google by typing in "link:YourURL.com" and seeing
what sites show up in the results. It's a good idea to check your
site's link popularity with several search engines, because the
results can vary widely.
3. Content
You've probably heard the phrase, "Content is King!"
Well, it is, somewhat. What I mean is, content is very important,
but you don't have to have it to get on top. It does help, and there
are some websites that have reached top positions because of content
relevent to the search term (keyword), but there are also some websites
on top with almost no content, achieved through link popularity.
But when you have a lot of competition, you need to work on both
to ensure top placement. Content and link popularity. And the fresher
the content, the better. That means that your content must change
periodically to remain fresh. And one of the best ways to ensure
fresh content without physically changing the content yourself is
through RSS feeds.
RSS stands for Real Simple Sindication, which are feeds that use
a technology called XML to deliver information to your desktop or
Web browser, and it updates automatically so you get fresh content
without lifting a finger. For an example of an RSS feed, look at
the the column on the right of this page under the heading "Search
Engine News". That is an RSS feed, and we use them on several
of our pages. That way when the Google robot spiders this page,
it will see fresh content, telling it that this page is fresh and
active, not dormant and stagnant.

A search engine optimization
(SEO) maintenance service plan will ensure that your site will
continue to increase in its rankings, attract more visitors and
make more sales. It's not enough to simply design your web site,
have it optimized for the search engines and expect it to continually
rank well. If left alone, you may soon lose the business your web
site initially generated.
